Babies are born with multiple, sophisticated skills and the systems for deploying those skills already in place. Philosophers call them agencies. Pediatricians call them Reflexes. Chomsky calls them Faculties. Freud called them Unlearned Urges. I call them Hybrid Skills. Through them children can and do teach themselves to learn, adapt and evolve through Ideation.

Some of these skills are totally developed early on and some are still a work in progress. A baby’s ability to suck is perfectly adapted before it is born. The ability to balance on two legs is there at or before birth also but only as potential waiting for to be deployed. It is the same with the immune system, the central nervous system, the cardiovascular system and all the other systems and skills; especially learning. They are already there at birth ready to get better with use or practice. Or not.
