The Foundation for Critical Thinking makes the best case for teaching critical thinking skills. “We do not know what students will need to know in the future. We do know that they will need to know, and we do know that they will need to be skilled in finding out the answers.” The Foundation for Critical Thinking’s stresses the need to improve the way students think about historical, biological, sociological, mathematical, literary, and scientific content using disciplined reasoning.
That skill will never go out of fashion. It will always help children manage the future and change. It always has. And critical thinking is more necessary for children than ever before in history. Historically the planet threatened us if we made mistakes, now we threaten the planet with ours.
School districts should be aware of the need to teach or rather encourage critical thinking now more than ever, since the investment capital of this new century is only flowing to areas with an excellent educational system; and that means one that produces graduates who are able to think for a living. Not remember facts.
