Simply telling children that, “The best way to understand something is to write about it,” or advising them that, “The most important task in writing an essay is to decide what your opinion on the subject is before writing,” is a little bit like saying, “Be creative,” or “Be more imaginative,” or “Be more original.” The bewildered expression on their faces is likely to tell the story: “I would love to, but I don’t know how.” In reality they do know how because they were born with all the skills. They just need to be triggered.
